Asthma Education Program

Asthma affects more than 7 million kids and is the most common chronic disease of childhood. It can have a great impact on the lives of both the children and their families.

However, with effective medications and self-care techniques such as breathing and relaxation exercises, most children with asthma lead normal lives. Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center's asthma educators offer a support group and “One-on-One” asthma education to patients, parents and caregivers to learn about asthma and what you and your child can do to help control asthma. These one-hour sessions will be presented by appointment via a referral from your primary care physician to PKIMC’s respiratory therapy department.

Asthma topics include:
  • What is asthma and what are the symptoms
  • Common triggers of asthma
  • Environmental control measures: (avoiding triggers/triggers unique to Kodiak etc.)
  • Effects of secondhand smoke on asthma
  • Early warning signs and symptoms of an asthma flare-up
  • Description of types of medicines used to manage asthma and how they work
  • Delivery devices used for asthma medications and how to use them
  • Peak flow meter, spacer, home nebulizers
  • Action Plan and review of when to call the doctor
  • Management of asthma in schools, day-care, baby-sitter and sports
  • Community Resources available
  • “One-on-one” question and answer period
  • Call (907)486-9519 for information on how to schedule. You're welcome to bring your child six years of age and older, and other people involved with the management of your child's asthma (grandparents, babysitters, etc.) to the session or support group offering
If you have a referral from your child's primary care doctor, you may be eligible for
pre-certification and payment from your insurance company.

The staff also offers:
  • Email and telephone consults with a PKIMC clinician to discuss questions or concerns about your child's asthma
  • Information about local and national resources for children with asthma
  • Asthma support for small Kodiak community groups (e.g., schools, daycare centers, PTAs, church groups, etc.)
  • Use of materials available through PKIMC’s affiliation with the American Association for Respiratory Care and Monaghan Medical, such as videotapes, DVD’s, handouts, support resources, books, etc.
