Providence Valdez Medical Center cares for students after school bus accident

Valdez, AK – During the afternoon of Friday, Jan. 10, Providence Valdez Medical Center was notified by emergency medical services of a motor vehicle accident at Mile 55 of the Richardson Highway involving a collision between a school bus and a semitrailer. The school bus was carrying high school ski-team students from Kenai and Soldotna. Providence Valdez immediately began preparing for patients and implemented its disaster plan.

Providence Valdez worked collaboratively with emergency medical services personnel in treating 28 patients. Radiology exams and other clinical services were provided. Patients in critical condition were transported by air ambulance to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage for further treatment after they were stabilized by Providence Valdez caregivers. All of the physicians from Valdez Medical Clinic were involved in the care provided. This was the highest volume of patients ever received by Providence Valdez in a single event.

“Emergency preparedness drills are part of the ongoing training that Providence Valdez conducts on a regular basis,” said Barbara Bigelow, administrator of Providence Valdez Medical Center. “Our caregivers’ dedication to emergency preparedness training and operational excellence was evident last Friday as emergency response teams worked diligently to ensure care was provided.”

Providence Valdez commends the physicians, hospital staff, emergency medical technicians, the City of Valdez and the Valdez Police Department for the efficient response ensuring high-quality care to multiple patients in a short period of time.

Providence Valdez would also like to thank the Kenai and Soldotna ski coaches, Valdez City School District personnel, Valdez residents and community members for the care and compassion extended to visiting students to ensure their needs were met.
