Susan Butcher Family Center

Over 2000 individuals receive a cancer diagnosis each year in the State of Alaska. Cancer remains the number one cause of death in Alaska since 1990. The impact of cancer is not only on the patient but the entire family: physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially.
The Susan Butcher Family Center (SBFC) offers support, mentoring, and education for family members impacted by an adult’s cancer.
As caring people of Alaska we offer care and compassion for children and teens.
We address a population spectrum from prenatal to young adult (age 23).  Services are provided without a cost to families in the State of Alaska regardless of where a person might receive cancer treatment. Services are provided across the cancer continuum – including time of diagnosis, treatment, remission, survivorship, reoccurrence, end of life, and bereavement.
Licensed clinical and educational staff provides guidance to family members on an individual, family, and group basis in a multi-age classroom environment.  The SBFC is equipped with age and developmentally appropriate resource materials.
Program Services
The program offers 12 learning centers that highlight avenues and outlets for families to gain information about cancer, express their feelings, discover ways to cope, and experience healing in a compassionate environment.
The learning centers encompass arts and crafts, puppetry, movement, nutrition, science, books/videos, dramatic play, animal assisted interactions, multimedia, board games, horticulture, and music.
Susan Butcher Family Center staff is available for consultation and working together with schools and community organizations.  Pamphlets about the psychosocial impact of cancer on the family are distributed to the public.  The SBFC also arranges times for community tours and open lab hours where family members can work together in the classroom.
To arrange visits and/or appointments, please call 907-212-6876. The Susan Butcher Family Center is open 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Tuesday - Friday and is located within the Providence Cancer Center in Anchorage, Alaska.
