New Providence Maternity Center begins opening this fall

Tours available during open house, Sept. 22

ANCHORAGE, AK – The new Providence Maternity Center will begin opening this fall, providing mothers and families with the highest level maternity care available, complemented by the comforts of home.
The Maternity Center, designed with mom, baby and family in mind, will open in phases starting with the Mother-Baby Unit in October. The Mother-Baby Unit caters to the needs of mom and baby after the baby is born.TCHAP_color_sml.jpg
Each spacious mother-baby room includes:
  • Private bathroom with shower
  • Baby-bathing sink
  • Comfortable couch that converts to a guest bed
  • In-room refrigerator
  • Cable TV, flat-screen TV, DVD player
  • Free Wi-Fi access
  • Scenic view from most rooms
“The new Maternity Center is designed based on input from parents, physicians and staff,” said Kate Mohr, interim executive director of The Children’s Hospital at Providence. “It offers the same great care for which Providence is known, while providing as many comforts of home as possible.”
The Maternity Center is expanding and being modernized as part of the Generations project, so named because of the Providence commitment to care for generations of Alaskans.
“Alaska’s population continues to grow, and the needs of our families are changing,” said Richard Mandsager, MD, chief executive of Providence Alaska Medical Center. “As Alaska’s only provider for many specialized health care services – such as advanced prenatal services and the Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit – the new Providence Maternity Center will meet the current and future needs of Alaska’s families.”
The opening of the Mother-Baby Unit in October will be followed by three more units:
  • Spring 2013: Newborn Intensive Care Unit, which provides care for extremely premature infants and babies who are critically ill or require surgery
  • Fall 2013: Prenatal Unit, which provides care for women with high-risk pregnancies
  • Fall 2014: Labor & Delivery Unit, which provides care for mom and baby during birth
All maternity services will continue for mothers and their families during the expansion.
When it’s complete, the Maternity Center is expected to be the first LEED-certified hospital building in Alaska. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, means the building is built and certified using methods such as sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
